What It’s Like to Be a Scholarship Winner

How does it feel to be a winner of “It’s About Time” Scholarship from the Abingdon Foundation?

By Kateryna Sikulska

My experience during virtual Women in Aviation International (WAI) conference 2021:

Kate with her original artwork

First of all, this scholarship is unlike many others and not awarded in cash. “It’s about time” scholarship provides full financial support for attending annual conferences in STEAM (Science/Technology/Engineering/Arts/Mathematics) fields, mentoring, networking, and assistance to see all of the different avenues in a particular area. Applicants are not required to be experienced in that industry but should be passionate and genuinely interested. Moreover, you choose the application format. Multiple ideas and creativity are encouraged. Still, it must be something that Abingdon Foundation can further utilize to promote their mission to empower and accelerate the female pursuit of more than just STEAM fields.

Helping Children Succeed at Online Learning

by Deanna Morris-Stacey

School is out for millions of children nationwide as K-12 education shifts from the classroom to the internet. While many school districts are giving their teachers crash courses in online learning, parents also play a major role in ensuring that kids get a first-rate education.

Are you struggling to balance your day with supervising your child’s coursework?

Try these suggestions for providing the parental guidance and input your child needs.

Planning and Preparing

Your school may have sent your child home with devices and materials for completing their assignments. You’ll still need to provide structure and motivation.

Follow these strategies to develop an effective structure: Schedule your days. Stick to your usual routines as much as possible, including bedtimes and mealtimes. Let your child know you expect them to log in on time for cl…

Meet Our 2021 WAI Scholarship Winner: Kateryna Sikulska

"My name is Kateryna Sikulska. I am a 26-year-old aviation lover from Ukraine, currently living in Florida. After six years of tailoring and fashion design, I decided to change my career path and become a pilot. To get into aviation, I started working in Turkish Airline’s customer service. It was the only job I could find in my city related to aviation that did not require previous experience. Being from a non-English-speaking country, I significantly improved my English skills while working with customers worldwide. Furthermore, I started to make paintings of aircrafts to express my passion for aviation and earn extra money for my future flight training. It is a great pleasure for me to become an inspiration for others while sharing my art on Instagram and making videos on YouTube. Thanks to my creative side, I am honored to be noticed by Abingdon Foundation as a winner for the “It’s about time scholarship”. As I recently moved to the US, this connection is a precious …

My Experience at the Women in Aviation Conference

By scholarship winner Chelsea Montgomery

2020 WAI Scholarship Winner Chelsea Montgomery

I am so honored to be able to share my experiences after having attended the 2020 Women in Aviation (WAI) International Conference this past March through the Abingdon Foundation’s It’s About Time Scholarship. After finding out about the It’s About Time Scholarship through Facebook, I knew it was an opportunity I did not want to pass up. Ever since my first Women in Aviation Girls in Aviation Day at age sixteen, I have realized the importance of and felt very strongly about women in STEAM fields, especially aviation. I have taken the time to study past and present aviatrixes and admire Ruth Nichols for her impact of founding Relief Wings, Sally Ride for her contribution to aerospace science, Galina Korchuganova for keeping women active in aviation when men were pushing them out, Elinor Smith for being the youngest pilot at 16, and Amelia Earhart for her courage and wise word…

Congratulations on Our Gold Seal of Transparency!

Did you know that because nonprofit organizations are exempt from paying taxes, everything about their operations can be accessed by the public? Why would you want to access the financials for a nonprofit? Because if you were considering making a donation, you may want to know if 80% of their donations received are going to administrative costs or towards their mission. Most people want their money to go towards the mission of the organization rather than the salaries of employees or administrative costs.

The largest and most prominent group that helps you find out about non-profits is called Guidestar. Their goal is to provide high quality information about US non-profits so that people can better decide who they want to support, donate to, or volunteer for an organization that falls in line with their values. They gather and organize the information for over 2.7 Million nonprofits - including Abingdon Foundation!

For res…
