First of all, this scholarship is unlike many others and not awarded in cash. “It’s about time” scholarship provides full financial support for attending annual conferences in STEAM (Science/Technology/Engineering/Arts/Mathematics) fields, mentoring, networking, and assistance to see all of the different avenues in a particular area. Applicants are not required to be experienced in that industry but should be passionate and genuinely interested. Moreover, you choose the application format. Multiple ideas and creativity are encouraged. Still, it must be something that Abingdon Foundation can further utilize to promote their mission to empower and accelerate the female pursuit of more than just STEAM fields.

Meet Our 2021 WAI Scholarship Winner: Kateryna Sikulska

"My name is Kateryna Sikulska. I am a 26-year-old aviation lover from Ukraine, currently living in Florida. After six years of tailoring and fashion design, I decided to change my career path and become a pilot. To get into aviation, I started working in Turkish Airline’s customer service. It was the only job I could find in my city related to aviation that did not require previous experience. Being from a non-English-speaking country, I significantly improved my English skills while working with customers worldwide. Furthermore, I started to make paintings of aircrafts to express my passion for aviation and earn extra money for my future flight training. It is a great pleasure for me to become an inspiration for others while sharing my art on Instagram and making videos on YouTube. Thanks to my creative side, I am honored to be noticed by Abingdon Foundation as a winner for the “It’s about time scholarship”. As I recently moved to the US, this connection is a precious …

My Experience at the Women in Aviation Conference

By scholarship winner Chelsea Montgomery

2020 WAI Scholarship Winner Chelsea Montgomery

I am so honored to be able to share my experiences after having attended the 2020 Women in Aviation (WAI) International Conference this past March through the Abingdon Foundation’s It’s About Time Scholarship. After finding out about the It’s About Time Scholarship through Facebook, I knew it was an opportunity I did not want to pass up. Ever since my first Women in Aviation Girls in Aviation Day at age sixteen, I have realized the importance of and felt very strongly about women in STEAM fields, especially aviation. I have taken the time to study past and present aviatrixes and admire Ruth Nichols for her impact of founding Relief Wings, Sally Ride for her contribution to aerospace science, Galina Korchuganova for keeping women active in aviation when men were pushing them out, Elinor Smith for being the youngest pilot at 16, and Amelia Earhart for her courage and wise word…

My Experience at the 2019 Women in Aviation International Conference

Written by: Yasna Taieb

I am incredibly honored to be able to share my experience after having attended the 2019 Women in Aviation International Conference this past March through the Abingdon Foundation’s It’s About Time Scholarship. I came across the Abingdon Foundation on Instagram, and immediately googled them to learn more. After exploring their website, I read about all of the remarkable women who comprise of the Abingdon team and continue to build the Foundation through their diligence and experience. The Abingdon Foundation exists to empower females in non-traditional fields of STEAM - Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. After more research, I came across the It’s About Time Scholarship and immediately knew that I wanted to apply once I read the application criteria. The scholarship asks applicants to submit a creative submission, which I believe is great idea as it does not limit the content of the applications –your application is wh…

The Importance of Applying for Scholarships

This post was written by Dr. Bethany Miller

What Happens When a Scholarship Goes Unused?

This year, the first full year of Abingdon Foundation, we gave away three fully-funded, all-inclusive scholarships to attend industry conferences. Our winners were women from the fields of helicopter aviation, general aviation, and Scuba diving. They were flown from their homes in Colorado, South Africa, and Tennessee. They were provided full entry to Heli-Expo, the Women in Aviation conference, and DEMA (the Diving Equipment and Marketing Association) Scuba diving show. Their hotel and transportation costs were covered. They networked with industry peers and professionals. They gathered memories for a lifetime. They created innovative works of art, mentorship and advocacy programs, and educational tools that will be used in the future by Abingdon Foundation. They are now influencing the next generation of women pursuing nontraditional careers in STEAM fields. …

How the It’s About Time Scholarship Helped Me Scuba Dive Again

This scholarship provided the recipient an all-expenses paid trip to the Diving Equipment Marketing Association conference. DEMA is not affiliated with the Abingdon Foundation. This post was written by Deanna Morris-Stacey.

Deanna Morris-Stacey won the 2018 scuba diving scholarship.

Prior to my experience at the DEMA show, my dive log was filled with only five pages of information that consisted of a few hours in a local rock quarry and a dive with the gentle, giant manatee in Crystal River, Florida. After those adventures, I packed away my suit for over 10 years.

I was awarded the 2018 It’s About Time scholarship to the DEMA show at the Las Vegas Convention Center. DEMA (Diving Equipment and Marking Association). The Abingdon Foundation strives to influence, encourage and embolden women in their pursuits of extraordinary lives. The scholarship included registration, airfare, room, and board. Through this scholarship I was introduced to key peop…

My Experience As the 2018 Helicopter Scholarship Winner

This scholarship provided Holley an all-expenses paid trip to the 2018 Heli Expo. Heli Expo is not affiliated with the Abingdon Foundation. This post was written by Holley Gardel.

2018 Helicopter conference scholarship winner Holley Gardel

Although I had been involved in the helicopter industry previously and am a volunteer with Whirly-Girls, I applied for the scholarship because I knew it would be the best way to make valuable connections in the industry and help me move forward in my career. Since I had been to Heli-Expo several times, I knew what to expect. However, I have always been glued to the Whirly-Girls booth and couldn't get out and participate in networking events and programming. I was thankful for being able to take advantage of the show and all it had to offer. I believe a first-time attendee would have a mind-blowing experience. And someone like me, who has been many times, but couldn't take advantage of all the expo has to offer previously, wo…

My 2018 Women In Aviation Experience

Khodani Davhana was the 2018 Women In Aviation scholarship winner. Read about her experience and how she will continue to pursue aviation.

2018 Women in Aviation conference scholarship winner Khodani Davhana

This post was written by Khodani Davhana, our 2018 Women In Aviation scholarship winner.

It took me a while to decide which Abingdon Foundation scholarship to apply for. I was intrigued by the Abingdon Foundation – an organization that is all for trailblazers and supporting women who push boundaries. Secondly, the opportunity to meet women from all over the world who share the same passion and love for aviation with me sounded like a dream! I wanted to hear their stories; how and why they got involved in aviation; and what kind of impact the aviation industry has made in their lives. Above all, I needed to absorb all the lessons I could gain from that kind of experience and, simply, to be inspired. The idea of being around all these diverse women…
